My name is Destiny Walker and I am an incoming senior at Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota (SMU) majoring in criminal justice and psychology with a minor in art. In my three years at SMU, I am very proud to have contributed to various multicultural and identity related initiatives on campus as well as rallied for solidarity, inclusivity and diversity. I was president of my university’s Sexuality and Gender Alliance and I currently serve as Vice President of Multicultural Affairs on Student Senate. In five years, I would like to continue inclusivity work by providing resources to minority youth who have encountered the criminal justice system. I would like to provide them with the proper skills and foundation to prevent recidivism.
I look up to quite a few people but there are three strong women in particular who have helped me get to where I am today. Alisa Macksey, Octavia Brown, and my mom, Tawanda Hawkins are just a few of the many important people in my life. All three of them have shown me that anything can be accomplished and are always there to fill me with confidence even on my most difficult days. In my free time I like to do art whether it be painting, drawing, embroidery, or poetry. One of my favorite movies is “Little Shop of Horrors” and my favorite food is tofu curry. I am very excited to learn and grow with Winona County ASAP this summer!
