The second most commonly reported substance by youth in Winona County are e-cigarettes, commonly referred to as “vaping”. The latest Minnesota Student Survey (MSS) from 2019 shows us that 12% of 8th graders, and 15% of 9th and 11th graders reported using. We are concerned that past month e-cigarette use doubled among 8th graders from 2016 to 2019, but we are hopeful that students are learning and talking more about the harms of vaping. A majority of students we conducted listening sessions with in 2017 perceived e-cigarette use and vaping to be a moderate or great problem. With help from our school,
healthcare, parent, and youth partners we can continue the trend of promoting health and reducing youth vaping.
