Take Back Day on Apr 22, 2023

March 23, 2023 By asapinfo

April 22, 2023 from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. is National Take Back Day organized by the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA).

This is a great Spring Cleaning Event that Winona County ASAP and the Winona Police Department are hosting locally!

It is free, and community members can drive-through to drop off both unwanted prescription drugs and e-cigarette vaping devices.

The event will be held outdoors at the Winona Senior High School. Follow the existing driveway and neon green signs.

If you have additional questions, you may call our office at 507-474-9825 or email [email protected].

What items are accepted?

The Winona Police Department will collect tablets, capsules, patches, and other solid forms of prescription drugs. They will also collect electronic vaping devices and cartridges. Please remove lithium batteries.

Syringes and other sharps will not be accepted. Those can be taken to the Winona County Hazardous Waste Facility (225 W 2nd Street). Their hours are Monday-Friday 8:00am to 4:30pm.

Why should I participate?

Prescription drugs (RX) and nicotine products can harm the environment or become misused if not safely disposed.

Almost all e-cigarettes contain nicotine, which is extremely poisonous. They are considered hazardous waste and should not be thrown in the trash.

You can prevent accidental exposure to children, prevent underage misuse, and protect the enviornment by participating in Take Back Day!

Does this make a difference?

Yes! We held 15 Take Back Day events since 2016 and collected 867 lbs.

Prescription drug misuse among 11th graders also decreased from 10% to 3% from 2013 to 2019 (Minnesota Student Survey).

2022 Minnesota Student Survey Findings

January 25, 2023 By asapinfo

What is the survey?

The Minnesota Student Survey (MSS) is the primary source of comprehensive data on young people at the state, county, and local level in Minnesota. It has been conducted in schools every 3 years since 1989, and is the only consistent source of statewide data. Students are asked about a wide variety of topics including general health, substance use, mental health, and school engagement.

Prevention Works!

The survey was recently completed in 2022 and the latest results offer us both hope and concern. Some of the findings that raise concern include increases in marijuana use and anxiety or depressive symptoms. Conversely, findings that raise hope include steady declines in prescription drug misuse rates (since 2013) and alcohol use rates (since 2016).

We have been following the results of this survey for the last 10 years to inform our work and measure progress. Back then, we did a lot of work around prescription drug misuse when the opioid epidemic was surging, then shifted gears to help with the youth vaping epidemic, and now we’re shifting focus to mental health and marijuana education.
