I want to help teens and families because I’ve seen plenty of hurt related to alcohol and drug abuse with friends, family members, and some personal experience.
Going into high school, my parents divorced and I had to move into a new community. I remember feeling hurt, lost, and confused. To make friends and escape this, I would drink heavy on the weekends and eventually some weekdays, until senior year when I decided to change my lifestyle. Looking back, I am thankful for a lot of the outside support, including extended family and adult mentors.
Knowing a lot of other friends and families who experienced alcohol and drug problems, I wanted to learn how I could make a difference while at college. I studied Marketing and Sociology at Winona State University (WSU), and graduated in 2011. During my undergraduate studies I also volunteered in the community and counseled high school students while interning with Winona State University Admissions.
After college and a few years of local retail experience I enrolled in the Addiction Counseling Graduate Program through WSU-Rochester. While studying to become an alcohol and drug counselor I started attending ASAP meetings in 2013, and with the help of a fellow coalition member obtained an internship at the Family & Children’s Center. I became a Minnesota Licensed Alcohol & Drug Counselor (LADC) in December 2015, and am now thrilled to help our community work together in raising strong local youth without alcohol and drug abuse.
